Often, there are two different words used for the same thing. For example, one can say “I live a busy life” or “I have a quiet lifestyle”.
Style of living
Generally speaking, style of living is a set of characteristics that a person has developed during childhood. These traits include a specific way of doing things, as well as an overall objective. The lifestyle is reinforced through self-training, and rehearsal of character.
During the mid-19th century, the term “style of life” was used in both American and British literature. During that time, some writers overused the phrase. This may have been the case with Alfred Adler, who invented the term in 1929.
The concept was later refined by scholars like Thorstein Veblen, who asserts that people adopt certain schemes of life to distinguish themselves from their less fortunate peers. This is particularly true of people who have been socially indoctrinated by parents and other authority figures.
Another early modern researcher, Alfred Adler, defined the style of living as a system of judgement based on a person’s personal characteristics. Adler believed that an individual’s style of living develops in early childhood. He considered the style of living to be the same thing as a modern “lifestyle”. Adler’s book The Science of Living introduced the concept of the life-style tree. It explains that a tree’s style is a function of its size, the quality of its branches and its relationship to the environment. In other words, it is a function of its genetic endowment and interpersonal relations within the family.
Interestingly, Adler felt that there were actually four primary styles of the style. While the first was the most important, the last three were just as important. For example, the fanciest of the four styles was the most practical of them all.
The most important feature of the style of life is its effect on the individual’s self-concept. For example, a person who has been deprived of self-love will be more likely to develop a “getting-type” personality. This type of person lacks a self-concept and is more prone to dependence, submission and other forms of narcissism.
Change of lifestyle
Identifying the processes of lifestyle change in a group of patients who have cardiovascular disease was a goal of this study. In order to accomplish this, qualitative content analysis with explorative design was performed on a sample of high-risk individuals who underwent CVD lifestyle counselling in primary care. A deductive step was used to identify ten processes of change. These were coded and sorted into categories and subcategories, resulting in 148 codes.
These items were ranked as unhealthy (-1) or healthy (+1). The following processes of change were identified: self-efficacy, experiential, behavioural and support from others. The results suggested that there are two groups of people who have different readiness for lifestyle change. One group has the greatest potential to improve their lifestyle, while the other group is more resistant.
The motivational process was characterized by gaining enhanced knowledge, gaining trust in oneself, and gaining support from others. Participants reported that it was their own decisions that mattered the most.
