Whether you are in the process of choosing a law school, you are a law student, or you are just a casual fan of law, there is a great deal of information on the Internet that you should be aware of. You can read about common law and civil law, what you can study in law school, and whether you should have a JD or LLM degree.

Common law vs civil law

Basically, Common Law is a body of law based on a history of court rulings over a period of years. A similar concept is used in the civil law system.

The main difference between the two systems is that in the civil system, judges have less influence on determining a statute’s validity than in the common law system. This is because in the former, the judge’s duty is to create the precedent that binds future decisions. In the latter, the judge’s role is to apply the statute to the facts of the case.

The common law vs civil law debate is still relevant today, even though the two systems have become more closely intertwined. Despite the fact that some countries use just one system, most of the world uses a combination of the two.

Juris doctor vs LLM

Amongst lawyers, the most common method of practicing law is by receiving a Juris Doctor (JD) or a Master of Laws (LLM) degree. The degree offers many opportunities for employment in the legal profession.

The JD program is designed to prepare students to become successful attorneys in the real world. It requires students to study core subjects such as constitutional law, civil procedure, torts, and public law. They also take courses in specialized areas such as intellectual property, tax law, and legal research. During the program, students study critical cases that set important precedents in the field of law.

The LLM is considered a secondary degree and is typically more specialized. It is offered by many law schools. Applicants must hold an undergraduate degree in law before applying for an LLM.

LLM vs SJD

Those looking to get a law degree in the US may find themselves wondering whether to go for an LLM or a JD. While both degrees are similar in terms of their function, an LLM can be a useful way to enhance your knowledge of legal theory, while a JD will help you develop skills and expertise in practicing law.

The LLM is the most theoretical of the two, while the JD is more practical and relevant to real-world law practice. For example, a student with an LLM will be able to better understand the reasoning behind certain legal regulations and legislation. In fact, many high-level jobs require an LLM.

Depending on the specific program, an LLM can be obtained without having a JD. An LLM can be a good investment, especially if you are already interested in practicing law. It can also improve your chances of being hired at top law firms.

Non-JD degrees

Despite the fact that the Juris Doctor (JD) is the law degree of choice in many parts of the world, it is not the only option. The ABA defines three types of non-JD degrees: the Master of Science in Law, the Master of Legal Studies, and the Master of Dispute Resolution.

The Master of Dispute Resolution is a legal degree that offers people skills useful across a wide range of fields. These programs typically require a bachelor’s degree or higher and may be completed online or in a weekend class.

The Master of Legal Studies (MLS) is a degree that provides students with a broad understanding of legal theory and practices. It is often obtained by practicing lawyers. These programs are also designed to help enhance critical reading, writing, and research skills. Some schools offer evening and weekend classes.

Juris doctor vs SJD

Whether you are an American law student or an international law student, you may be wondering about the differences between a Juris Doctor (JD) and a Master of Laws (LLM). Depending on your intended career, these degrees can be valuable additions to your professional expertise.

A JD is a three-year professional degree that recognizes a holder’s professional level in law. It is typically offered by ABA-accredited law schools. However, many non-ABA-accredited law schools also offer the degree.

The Juris Doctor is usually required for practice in the United States. However, there are states that do not require the degree, and some allow foreign-educated lawyers to earn the degree.

An SJD is a shorter and less rigorous degree. It is primarily designed for foreign students who want to study law in the U.S. and to prepare for careers as legal scholars or professors. SJD programs do not have a traditional curriculum, instead, candidates are expected to conduct legal research and participate in seminars.
