Whether you want to go to Law school or are just curious about it, you will find plenty of resources to help you on your way. These guides cover everything from the different types of Law schools to alternative dispute resolution and the qualifications required to become a Lawyer.
Juris Doctor
Those who plan to go to law school often wonder what their primary degree should be. Several universities offer dual degree programs that allow students to pursue two degrees at the same time. These programs can be a bit time-consuming and require some patience. However, they can help prepare students for careers in museums, libraries, schools, government, and other areas.
In the United States, the term “Juris Doctor” is used to refer to a graduate-level professional degree in law. Unlike most PhD degrees, this degree is not a terminal degree. This degree is highly specialized and typically focuses on a particular area of law.
It is not uncommon for JD graduates to work in other fields, such as politics and lobbying. Upon graduation, an individual can expect a substantial salary.
A bachelor’s degree is generally required for admission to a law school. In addition to a bachelor’s degree, a student should have at least 12 hours of law course work.
Doctor of Juridical Science
Those interested in legal academia may pursue a Doctor of Jurridical Science in Law (JSD). This program is designed for students interested in deep legal writing, research, and scholarship. It is a rigorous graduate program that requires candidates to complete a publication-quality dissertation.
The SJD is one of the most advanced degrees in the Law School. The program focuses on producing original scholarship in the field of law. In addition, students receive a unique opportunity to specialize in a particular area of interest. Typically, students are drawn to the program by their desire to teach and research in the legal profession. They also work with internationally renowned faculty.
The program is designed for lawyers and scholars of law who aspire to become leaders in the international legal community. Students will take coursework on topics such as legal theory, intellectual property, and environmental and energy law. It is a highly selective program.
Candidates for the program must have earned a Master of Laws (LLM) or Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an American or foreign law school. In addition, they must have a minimum of a 2.7 cumulative grade point average. The application should contain a current resume and curriculum vitae. Applicants should also submit a writing sample of ten pages. It can be a published article or a brief excerpt of a longer work.
Master of Laws
Whether you’re a lawyer, a law professor, a compliance officer, or a business executive, a Master of Laws (LLM) program can help you advance your career. These advanced legal studies programs are offered by universities worldwide and offer students the opportunity to study in a variety of areas.
Graduates with an LLM typically work as lawyers in businesses or governmental organizations. They may also become law professors or serve as diplomats. The degree is awarded to those who have successfully completed the required coursework and dissertation. However, the salary of an LLM graduate depends on many factors. Generally, graduates can expect a higher salary than those without the degree.
A Master of Laws is a postgraduate degree. It is typically obtained after a year of full-time studies in law. These programs can be completed in a thesis-intensive or coursework-only format. A thesis-intensive program allows students to complete a thesis of four to sixteen credits. This option is geared towards law students with strong writing and research skills.
Alternative Dispute Resolution
When a company is wronged, they may argue that they should be able to have their case heard in arbitration, a judicial process similar to litigation. In fact, the decision is made by an arbitrator who is usually chosen by the parties themselves.
However, there is another type of arbitration, called Lok Adalat, a unique Indian approach to ADR. It is part of the international commercial arbitration system and is based on the National Legal Services Authority Act, 1987.
The goal of NCR’s ADR program is to eliminate the need for litigation and save the company money. The company’s law department measures the number of issues resolved without litigation, the amount of time saved, and the quality of the solutions.
In recent years, NCR has paid less in outside legal fees. While NCR is not yet at a point where it does not need to litigate, it is certainly in a better position than it was five years ago.
